A more digital Denmark
With the new joint strategy, the central, regional and local governments are laying the foundation for the digital public sector of the future and the strategy sets three ambitious, but realistic goals for development in the years to come:
- Digitisation and better reuse of data will help create more cohesive and efficient public services with digital, high-quality welfare solutions. Among other things, this will make it even easier for citizens to meet the public sector digitally and to experience more coordinated public services across authorities.
- Moreover, public sector efforts will make it easier and more attractive to run a business and they will reduce the administrative burden on businesses. For example, the business community will get access to more public sector data which can be exploited as raw material for research, technology and innovation.
- Development must take account of data security for citizens and businesses such that Danes continue to have confidence in digital solutions. Denmark will continue to be an inclusive society in which everyone can participate, both those who are digitally ready, and those who do not know how to use the digital solutions or who do not have access to them.
Danish Minister for Finance, Claus Hjort Frederiksen, is pleased about the unique Danish tradition of central, regional and local governments collaborating on digitisation:
"Internationally, Denmark is seen as a pioneer in public sector digitisation. The close collaboration is core in an efficient, cohesive digital public sector. This means that, as a society, we are prepared to adapt and to exploit the opportunities offered by the new technologies while still preserving the uniquely Danish sense of security and confidence in each other and in society."
Minister for Business and Growth, Troels Lund Poulsen:
"The Danish Government has high ambitions within digitisation, and the administrative burden on businesses needs to be reduced even further, for example with automatic business reporting, where, in the long term, we will eliminate manual reporting. I am pleased that the digitisation of Denmark has succeeded in ensuring an overall vision in which efficiency improvements in the public sector go hand in hand with a better framework for growth in the Danish business community.”
Martin Damm, President of Local Government Denmark:
"The new strategy will help maintain strong focus on collaboration and on resolving problems that central, regional and local governments are not able to deal with individually. The strategy makes it easier to improve local services. For example for people with psychiatric problems and addiction problems to undergo consistent treatment across local and regional governments.”
Bent Hansen, Chairman of Danish Regions:
"I am particularly pleased that efforts in the years to come will focus on sharing as well as securing information. For patients, it is important that relevant information from hospitals can be shared easily, so their own general practitioner or home nursing care team is informed quickly. People should be able to trust that only relevant information is passed on and only to the right recipients."
About the Digital Strategy 2016-2020
For 15 years, central, regional and local governments have worked together on joint public sector digital strategies. The objective is to use digitisation as a tool to rethink processes in order to modernise services for citizens and businesses as well as to make the public sector more efficient.
The Digital Strategy for 2011-2015 resulted in Digital Post for citizens and businesses, that more than 100 digital self-service solutions became mandatory to use, the launch of nationwide implementation of telemedicine and welfare technologies, the establishment of the Basic Data Programme, etc.
The Digital Strategy 2016-2020 contains 33 specific initiatives which, together, lay the foundation for public sector digitisation in the years to come. Further initiatives and efforts will be launched or adjusted up to 2020 in order to meet current needs and technological possibilities.
