An increasing number of Danes check their tax assessment notice digitally

08-04-2014 News UK

An increasing number of Danes have this year taken part in Denmark’s largest one-off digital event: the tax assessment notice. SKAT (Danish Tax and Customs Administration) and the Danish Agency for Digitisation see this huge interest as an indication that Danes in general are prepared to meet public authorities on the Net.

A total of 7.7 million visits. So many times were the tax assessment notices shown during the first two weeks after having been made accessible.

The 7.7 million visits cover more than 2.8 million Danes who have checked their tax assessment notice digitally once or several times.

In 2013, the number was lower with 2.4 million Danes who checked their tax assessment notice at skat.dk. In other words, there has been a 17 pct. increase in one year:

- We strive to simplify the entire self-assessment process every year to provide citizens with the best basis for paying the right amount of tax in an easy and correct manner. We have also worked hard on the queuing system so that citizens know exactly when they can access their tax assessment notice. At the same time, we must ensure that we do not let more people in than the system can manage. Therefore, we are very pleased that even more people than last year have wanted to see their tax assessment notice digitally, says Director-General Jesper Rønnow Simonsen, SKAT.

Approx. 72 pct. of the visits regarding the tax assessment notice take place using NemID – the Danish digital signature. This is also an increase compared with last year when approx. 70 pct. logged in using NemID.

The next large-scale public digital event is scheduled for 1 November 2014, when Danes must be prepared to receive their letters from public authorities digitally only.

- We are in the process of an enormous transformation of how citizens and companies communicate with public authorities. When I see the run on SKAT’s website, it confirms my view that the vast majority of Danes are ready to e.g. receive their mail digitally rather than in the mailbox outside their homes, says Director-General Lars Frelle-Petersen, Danish Agency for Digitisation.

Facts

Tax assessment notice

In 2013, approx. 2.4 million Danes checked their tax assessment notice digitally at skat.dk in the course of the first two weeks. This number has increased to 2.8 million in 2014 of a population of 5.6 million.

Digital Post

Digital Post from public authorities corresponds to the mail that citizens today receive from SKAT, the municipality and other public authorities. This kind of mail will become increasingly digitised in future.

From 1 November 2014, all Danes above the age of 15 must be able to receive Digital Post from public authorities. Unless you have done so, it would be a good idea already now to register at borger.dk or e-Boks.dk. Guidance and assistance is available there, and it is possible to be exempted from Digital Post.
